5 Pack

So, I've just had the revelation that I'm packing 5 times over (not in order of importance):

1) packing my office files/stuff to make room for new furniture installation
2)packing my boss' office files/stuff to make room for new furniture installation
3)packing my apt to move up to Matt's
4)packing for my trip to CO
5)packing (or thinking about packing) for my wedding nights/honeymoon

Maybe I should hire these people!

Oh, this and 4.5 weeks till my wedding day....no stress whatsoever over here... :-)

My wonderful boss

So I came in Monday morning after a very long weekend and was doing the regular weekend catch up with my boss. I told her if I were a teacher I would take a couple of mental health days, sort of joking but sort of not. So then she told me to take the rest of Monday and all of Tuesday off as comp time for working so hard to start up our new department and working her Christmas party last Friday night. So I left a little while later, went home and promptly fell asleep for a couple of hours. I relaxed the rest of the day. Tuesday was clean my house day and I watched a movie, spent some time with my family and had a great day. Did I say I so much appreciate my boss?? Thank you Jesus, for good friends, a good house and a good boss!

Plugs

So I think I'm doing much the same as before - not really seeing or feeling much of a difference. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see how it goes. If this doesn't work then I might get real surgery...wouldn't that be grand!

So I think I'm feeling done with wedding planning...even though in reality I'm not done. We are doing well and we're down to the little things but I'm ready to hand it off to someone else. Anyone want to volunteer? :-)
Work is good and though I'm nursing my second cold in 2 weeks , (the second one thanks to my giving nephews), I'm hanging in there!
On a side note, I'm getting punctal plugs in on Friday so I'm hoping that will help my oh-so-severe and obnoxious dry eye syndrome. Ah, isn't life fun?

2 day headache...and still going

Anyone have any cures for a nice sized migraine? I don't think the Advil is working and I need to try something else. This headache started the night before last and has turned into a full fledged migraine...good times! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Planning...does it ever end?

So while Matt is taking a well-deserved nap and as I can't sleep, I figured I might as well blog about the successful day we've had in regards to planning our wedding. We have written - make that downloaded and edited/adjusted-our vows, have a rough outline of our ceremony, finished the wording for our invitations, confirmed on our reception place and menu, started our registry and found a great possibility for a bridesmaid dress.
Since we've both been on our own for a while and we have lots of stuff between the two of us, we didn't really think we needed to register but it's amazing what you think would be fun to have when you go and look at the wall o' kitchen gadgets at Bed Bath & Beyond. Anyway, we've had what amounts to a banner day around here.
And that doesn't even include last week when we went to IKEA and bought 2 neat bookshelves and very nice TV table with glass doors - and then proceeded to put all three of them together that same evening! Needless to say, we both were rather sore the next day but all three additions look really nice in his apartment.
So that's the latest from the northeast section of Lake Wobegon. Hope this update finds you happy and well!

The Uptown side of campus

So it's hard to believe I've been at my new job almost a month! I'm really enjoying and am quickly gaining a much larger view of the university, as opposed to my old view, limited to the Treasurer's Office. It's fun to be on the complete opposite side of campus and to see a new perspective of this place. I'm doing a project on Restricted Fund Compliance right now and having a really good time. I'm also working with my boss on some Public Safety issues as well as rolling out some new and long-awaited websites for different areas across campus. It's good to finally be in a job where everything isn't so rote and programmed. Believe me, I have no idea what could come across my desk on a daily basis. I love the fact that my boss trusts me with some pretty important things and works with me to complete them in the best possible manner. So far we have worked together really well and I hope it continues. We've had some good conversations about some difficult situations she's in and it's nice to know she wants to hear what I'm thinking.
I'm also right on Nassau Street now so it's easier access to the library, stores and more lunch options as well!
Anyway, all that to say I'm really enjoying my job and am glad that I took the opportunity to learn something new!

The beauty of Costco

My mom suggested to me a while ago to look at bulk flowers for our wedding at Costco. Now, I know she buys all sorts of fun things there, and I mean all sorts, so I decided to try it. Matt and I looked it up on Saturday night and lo and behold, we are definitely getting our flowers from Costco. $700 for a 40 piece set of mixed colored roses....$700! I'm quite excited and even though the contents of the 40 piece set are more than we need, we couldn't quite make it on the 20 piece. I know, sounds like place settings right? Anyway, check one more thing off the list. Hooray!
So not a very exciting post for most of you but it makes me happy! :-)

Bike tires

So those of you who know me know that about 1 year and 1/2 ago I got a flat tire on my bike and had since to buy new tires. Life happens, knees need therapy and these things are forgotten. But, yesterday I put new tires and tubes on my rims so I'm good to go. Matt inspired me since he's wanting to get a bike and the weather is supposed to be super nice the next couple of days. So, I'll test my bike this weekend and see how the knees are and hopefully get back into one of my favorite pastimes! Have a great weekend!

Choosing Joy

Our sermon this week was on the excercise of celebration - essentially the choice of joy in every circumstance. Not for every circumstance, but in the midst of it, to reveal and show God's glory as the ultimate end of all situations. Brad challenged us to read Phillipians this week so I'm doing that each day this week. Today I did an overall reading and circled each time Paul wrote joy or rejoice.

Time warp

So it's been a while and life has been crazy but I thought I'd post something anyway, just so people would stop commenting on the fact that I haven't posted in a while.
Anyway, wedding plans are coming along quite well - I just bought my shoes on ebay on Friday and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. I have most of my attire/wardrobe for the forthcoming Saturday and we have the major things reserved so now it's onto minute details, like wording of the invites and favors and bridal party gifts and what style of tux shirt Matt wants to wear...all sorts of fun stuff!
Also, regarding my new job which I start in 3 weeks, we are interviewing candidates all day this Wednesday so hopefully we'll all agree on someone who we think would do well here. Someone asked me in church yesterday if I could be replaced so easily so of course my immediate reply was no, I can't be replaced but someone else can certainly do my job! :-) So we'll see how tired I am after Wednesday.
And for random's sake, this morning I got a text from a friend I haven't talked to in a while but it made me smile. It's good to have friends with whom you can easily re-connect! And I've run into all sorts of people on Facebook - but we're all having fun!

I realize, after reading a few of my older posts, that I use "so" quite often in my blogging as well as in my everyday speak. 5 of my last 8 posts begin with So. Is that even grammatically correct? I think I picked that up from D and B. They say it quite often but maybe don't realize it. I guess there could be worse words to use...

Work after vacation

So this is by far the busiest I've ever been after coming back from a vacation...my desk is an absolute forest with all this paper on it! At least the days are going by quickly. I guess that's what I get for being useful. :-) I believe a little overtime will be in order this week just to make it manageable! But when I get really crazy, I always have Fernando Ortega to keep me sane. Okay, back to work everyone!

A trip to Missouri

Matt and I just got back from a visit to see some friends in MO. We flew out with no problem on Thursday and met Doug at the airport. Doug is Matt's good friend from college with whom we stayed 3 nights. We went to a birthday party on Thursday night and on Friday had a lot of fun. We went to the Arch, rode the tram up and took some pictures, had some very tasty BBQ at Bandana's, then went back to Doug's place, played cards and he gave us a ride on his Suzuki...that was a blast! I love bikes! And yes Mom, I wore a helmet this time. Later that night we went to this awesome adult race car/go kart thingy. It was a Grand Prix Speedway race car place and we had 3 races with suits and helmets and everything. It was a blast!! We all qualified for turbo and I only got 1 warning. :-) Though we were sore afterwards a bit of Marble Slab dessert made us feel better. Saturday we played a bit of frisbee in Doug's really nice backyard, had some tasty pizza and then headed down to Bolivar to visit the Pitts family. They moved back to MO in November so it was marvelous to spend some time with them.
We went to Silver Dollar City on Sunday and rode a couple of rides before it started raining. We got 1/2 of our money back because we were only able to ride a few rides before the rain cut everything off but we still had fun. I highly recommend the Powder Keg and Wildfire if you are near Branson anytime soon.
Sunday afternoon we headed back to Doug's for one last time and on Monday flew back to Jersey. It was great and though we, I should say Matt, drove nearly 500 miles in about a day and a half, I think it safe to say we had a really enjoyable trip. Here are a few pictures:

Mac & Cheese

So I went to Aldi's last night and was comparing prices. Cheese Club mac & cheese for .29 and Kraft mac & cheese for .89. Being the adventurous (and frugal) one that I often am, I opted for the the Cheese Club brand and much to my delight it tasted really good, well, as good as mac & cheese from a box can taste. Anyway, I was excited that I successfully saved .60 and will happily buy Cheese Club brand again! :-) It's the small joys that keep life happy.

Backpacking

So a few friends and I did an overnight backpacking trip this weekend. It was really fun and we'll definitely do it again. Matt and I wanted to try it so we brought a few friends along who we also thought would be game. The hiking path in wasn't bad at all - it was, however, one the worst possible days we could have chosen to hike in, since it was in the upper 80s and super humid!! Needless to say it rained that night - as it usually does when one goes camping but it felt good..at least outside my tent. Inside was another story as most of the venting on my one-man is up top - where the rain fly had to be. I was sweating so badly because of the rain, humidity and lack of circulation. I've learned the lesson of bad tent venting and will be purchasing a better one-man for future backpacking trips, let me assure you! We left a little before 8 the next morning to hike out and made it back to the cars in record time. I drove home and threw my stuff in the laundry and promptly took a shower. I was telling my mom I felt like I needed to take a shower for every layer on me, sweat, bug repellent, sweat, wet wipes (supposedly to clean you) and sweat. I felt a world better afterwords, aired everything out on my teeny porch - I set up my tent at an angle and it looked funny but it worked! So we'll go again sometime, me definitely with a better tent. I must also say the ThermaRest I bought was a great investment!! So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :-)

Gray Hair

So I noticed this weekend that I have 2 fully gray hairs and a few others that are starting to look a good deal lighter than my normal hair color. I showed the two hairs to one of my co-workers and she started laughing, a very encouraging response I must say. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Now to narrow who or what it is that could possibly be doing this to me...I'm only 28!!

5/15: a post script - my sister reminded me last night that gray hair is a crowning glory and no, I will not be dying my hair. :-)

Classical music

I have recently fallen back in love with classical music and have spent a good deal of my time just sitting on my couch, enjoying a few good symphonies and concertos. I was trying to relax one night and instead of watching a movie or reading I decided to just turn on some nice music and the next thing I knew I was conducting and remembering all those days at Hillsdale -all the hours spent analyzing, conducting, listening and composing. So now I listen to it on the way to work in the morning to get ready for the day and on the way home at night to decompress and reflect over the day. I'm quite happy and who knows? I might even get my cello back out...

New beginnings

I love spring! On my lunch hour today I took my lunch over to a quiet spot at the seminary and enjoyed the shade, the breeze and a good time of quietly singing some hymns...I love days like this. I'm going running after work as well just so I don't waste any of the time I could have outside.
So two friends of mine got married on Saturday and had a fabulous day for it! It was beautiful and I think everyone had a good time - the dance floor was certainly full for much of it. We were standing outside taking pictures (I chauffeured part of the wedding party to the park) and got a bit warm but the trees were absolutely gorgeous. Going to all these weddings causes me to think about mine someday and so I'm tossing ideas around.
Due to a sermon my pastor gave a couple of weeks ago regarding the importance of time in our lives I have decided to change up my nightly and morning routines. Hopefully I can keep it up for some successful amount of time!

Passing on

A mentor of mine from the Focus on the Family Institute recently passed away. She'd been battling cancer for a little while and scores of us were in prayer for her but the Lord decided she had done what He wanted her to do down here. Or else He just wanted her with Him, which would be completely understandable - we all loved Sheryl dearly and she was an incredible woman after God's own heart. I learned a ton about truly loving people and good and true femininity from her and often review my notes from her classes on marriage and family. She passed the torch onto all of us she touched so it is up to us to live out the truths she taught us. She desired nothing but the best from and for us. She left behind a good husband and 3 dear children. Sheryl was a great definition of love and her joy and sincerity will be missed. We will be praying and lifting her family up in prayer and love. Sheryl, we love you and will dearly miss you!

An Alabama Easter

So we recently returned home from a trip to AL for a wedding. The ceremony was beautiful and very well done and the reception was a good time too. I met a few of Matt's relatives/friends: Uncle Larry and Aunt Karen, Grandma Rosa, Grandma & Grandpa McKinley and the unbelievable Kerry -(I think that's how you spell his name and if not, I'm sure Matt will correct me.) Matt's brother Tim had just arrived back in the US from being in South Africa for 3 weeks and the poor guy was exhausted. Aaron's new wife is a sweetheart and I pray they will be fruitful and multiply in every way. Her family was really sweet and can grill shrimp and potatoes with the best! I've never seen shrimp that big!! I'm all for southern hospitality!
I had my dose of sweet tea and was very happy about that and I had a really good time learning more about Matt's family. Every family has its fun stories and interesting background and his is no different. His mom and I shared a hotel room each night while the men were stuffed in another one. We had a great time and we get along really well. His mom and dad are a great couple and quite humorous.

For Easter Sunday we went back to the church they used for the ceremony and heard some good Baptist preaching. He was actually a really good preacher and had an interesting take on John 20, specifically verse 7. I really like learning about the background and meaning of different acts in different cultures and he taught us about the significance to the servant of the napkin at a meal, whether it's wadded up and thrown in the middle of the table - signifying completion of the meal or if it's folded and set aside-signifying the master would be back. He then related that to John 20:7 in the sense that the napkin was folded and set aside away from the other grave clothes, meaning that Christ wasn't finished with his work. It was very good and got me thinking.

So I'm back at life and looking forward to the double date Matt and I are having tonight with Dave and Bethany. Have a great evening!

Chronological Bible and a wedding

So this year I started reading the Bible in chronological order and it's been really neat to see all relevant passages compared and to see the differences and try to figure them out. I'm reading the Samuels right now and they are interspersed with the Psalms as David created them in the midst of his circumstances.
Judges was read at a good time because I was babysitting the boys one night and the bedtime Bible story was about Deborah and Barak, which I had just read a few days before. Clearly the kids versions are summarized so I was able to answer all 511 questions Simeon asked regarding the story! Joel of course wanted me to sing the song of Deborah...
Anyway, it's been really neat and eye-opening and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year.

Matt and I are headed to AL on Thursday for his younger brother's wedding so it should be warm and fun and a good time meeting some of his mom's family. I'll check back upon my return.

Running

So I went for a run/walk yesterday evening. I was worried about my knees and how they would react but of course did it anyway. I can't just walk after years of running - please! So I did all my appropriate physical therapy prescribed stretches before and after and joy of joys - my knees don't hurt at all. Now my hams are different story but my knees are fine. This makes me very excited and though I'm sorely tempted to try it again tonight, I am not completely ignorant. I'll wait a couple of days and then try it again. But I did accomplish my goal of making it across the Delaware-Raritan Canal bridge over Rte. 1. I hadn't been that far south on the canal before but now I know where it goes: under 95 where you exit for Rte. 1 North and South and the curves under both exit ramps and then next to Rte. 1 South. It was quite fun - I always like figuring out where roads go.
Anyway, I'm happy my knees are good and grateful for marvelous spring weather!!

Job refusal

So I declined the job offer I've been thinking about for the past couple of months. It worked out really well and I think I got another mentor out of it! I'm glad the lady who I would have worked for took the time to really think about what she was looking for and was willing to take the time to find the right person. She said a number of nice things about my skill level, personality and such and wants to help me find the right job that might fit more with my personality and abilities, something that would perhaps challenge me more. It was a great experience and I was close yet again but I believe this to be the right decision and am looking forward to learning more about patience and what God has in store for me. So here I will stay for the near future.

One lady in my office was so happy when she found out I wasn't leaving she gave me a big hug! It's nice to be wanted! :-)

This is a Washington Post article about a local radio station. It seems a bit of a hard take but in the end, I believe I agree with the summary and basis of the article. I loved this station a few years ago when it did have more sermons and less music and nonsensical banter. Regarding the present station I'm not such a fan.

Termites or Flying Ants?

So on Saturday I went into my room to take a nap and was greeted by teeny winged creatures hanging out on my wall and my bed. So I called Matt and the maintenance men for help, naturally. The maintenance man thought they were termites so Matt and I went Home Depot for some termite spray. We got back and he sprayed that side of the room with the Raid and I hoped it would all be over. So I got a call yesterday from Russ, my maintenance man, and he said they weren't termites, it's apparently too early for them, so he believes them to be flying ants. So I finally moved back into my room last night, after having been sleeping in my living room the past four nights - though I must say my couch is most comfortable!!
I was also a little worried because I'm having a housewarming party this weekend and wasn't looking forward to having any uninvited guests of the insect variety. So I think we should be good to go for the party. All else is well and life is good. Adios for now!

My latest mantra and a movie

So my latest saying is that I am not as young as I once was. And the sad thing is it seems to have happened overnight! I can't do these up till midnight bouts very often anymore and it took me a bit longer than I expected to get over my move...I guess I'm getting older. It's no good when I wake up every morning and am incredibly tired, as if I've just run a marathon or something similar. I'm guessing it doesn't get better as time goes by but at least I know I'm not alone. To try and alleviate this problem, I've started going to bed at 9:45 each night (quite early for me!) and getting up at about 6:45 so I can have an easy, not so rushed morning. It's been pretty good so far but we'll see how long that lasts. I must say it's definitely been helpful to not have a cable or Internet connection right now! I'm not spending loads of time wasting away on my couch or computer chair as I have a tendency to do.

So why is it that Princeton people have to work on Presidents' Day? Almost everyone else I know is off today but no, here we are - ridiculous! (And working hard, can't you tell?)

I saw Music and Lyrics this weekend with some friends and must admit I was pleasantly surprised! I've grown quite caustic about romantic comedies and generally have a negative view of them but this was actually enjoyable. The Pop song was a)hysterical and b) quite catchy, as it's still in my head. There were a couple of scenes that could have been done away with but overall an enjoyable movie. The soundtrack might go on my list of wants - there was some great 80's music going on!

I love Freecycle!

For the uninformed, Freecycle is like Craig's List but it's all free! I put some stuff on this morning I wanted to get rid of before I move and it was spoken for in about 30 minutes! Now that's what I call great! I don't know why I didn't follow my sister's lead on this one earlier...they've gotten a ton of great stuff! (I've followed her lead on lots of other things.) My move is going well and will be complete on Saturday after I've moved all my furniture. I'm dead tired and want to be in one place or the other so I can't wait until I wake up Sunday morning in my new place. I think my mom put it well last night when I was complaining to her and she said that I feel like a nomad because I like things completed and done and this is so not completed and done. She also said I'm a nester, (I have the ability to nest all by myself), so not having a place to settle down in bothers me. Stuck between two places is not my idea of fun. I go to my house and it's half packed and empty but then I go to my apt. and it's all boxes - neither is very appealing. Two more days...and counting!

That's all I have to say about last night's game. :-) Oh, that and the rock, paper, scissors Bud light commercial was my favorite.

My own place

So I just signed my lease and have the keys in hand to my new apartment. Yeah! Now I can move all those boxes I have packed and since it's so convenient to work I can load up my van in the morning and take it down after work that day. I have pretty much everything I need except a couch so that's great! A friend of mine who's getting married in April is giving away some of her stuff so I'm getting a few things from her as well. And the great part is I live above the rental office/space that they use for show but the rental lady doesn't actually live there. So there won't be anyone below me at night which will nice for when I have people over.
And I have another interview tomorrow morning for the job I applied for so we'll see how that goes. Nothing like changing everything at once!
And just to let those of you who live in the area know...if I've helped you move previously I just might be calling on you to help me. :-)

Job search

So I just got back from interviewing with Human Resources about a position I applied for and I think it went really well. Of course, it was funny that the lady who interviewed me has only been at the University for a week... I also found it humorous that they wanted to test me on Word and Excel before I went in - uh, I've been here working in Finance for 4 years so I'm pretty sure I'm good on that! And needless to say I passed both tests just fine. :-) So now it's just waiting to see if I get called for a second round of interviews with the actual department.

This weekend I got a bunch of boxes so I think I"ll start packing books tonight since I've got to start sometime and books are the easiest.

I'm also a little tired today cause I didn't get to bed til midnight last night. I was babysitting but I didn't fall asleep this time after the kids went to bed because I brought a book to read instead.
Okay, back to the last 45 minutes of work today. Have a great evening or morning or afternoon- wherever you are!

Apartment search

So I think I've narrowed it down to 2 places from which I'll choose to live the next part of my life. Working in the accounting world as I do, after I was done looking I went home and made an Excel spreadsheet of all the pros and cons. :-) The amount of money I may spend on gas getting to work from one could even out the higher cost of rent at the other one. There aren't that many differences - the main thing would be location, of course. So I'm starting to collect boxes at work and will probably start with my books...gotta start somewhere. If you are in the area reading this and have access to boxes, I'll take them!
Oh, and in fun unexpected news, I apparently have a mouse upstairs in my bathroom - good times! Now to just find the little bugger!

Moving

So I'm moving sometime in February, out of my shared 3 BR, 2 Bath house to a 1 bedroom apartment. It's a ton of work looking at apts but I'm excited to finally live all by my lonesome - I've never truly lived by myself before so it should be a Grand Adventure, as A.A. Milne would say. I've looked at one place and have another appt. Saturday and might just take a day off work next week to look, since most places aren't open on the weekends. Finance wise I wasn't expecting this so soon but that's where my wonderful family comes in!!
And it's good I don't own much so the move should be pretty easy. The place will be quite sparsely furnished but so what? I'll still be having people over to eat at my cardboard table with me I'm sure. I might even put a tablecloth on if it's really important company...
